Third graders learned about indigenous tribes in Michigan and their culture, stories and traditions. One of these learnings was around Manoomin, wild rice that was an important winter food for indigenous tribes across the Great Lakes. Students researched rice camps that brought people together to teach the harvesting process of manoomin and bonded communities together. As a result of this project, students expanded their knowledge where rice grows, and reasons manoomin was a staple food indigenous communities.
