Beavers are Ecosystem Engineers

by SEMIS Coalition | May 17, 2022 | Community Forum 2022 | 16 comments

First slide of a presentation titled "Beavers are Ecosystem Engineers"

Third graders at Wylie Elementary school became aware of beaver activity on Mill Creek in downtown Dexter after reading an article in the SunTimes News. Our class invited expert guest speakers to teach us about the importance of beavers in an ecosystem and did lots of research to find solid arguments to present to the city council about why we believe the beavers in Dexter should stay in Mill Creek.

I wonder what creatures you got to see in your observation. Did you actually see a beaver? How special to become expert by visiting Mill Creek so often. Well done!

Very impressive research! I enjoyed learning from your presentation. Beavers are truly amazing creatures and it’s so special that you are taking the time to get to know them and how learn how they live.

Thank you for sharing your research and learning. Being good observers, like you both, is essential to our understanding of how connected all life-forms are, and how we can be better protectors of our environment. You inspired me to pay more attention to what is around me.
