It is always great to see SEMIS members celebrated in the media, and the SEMIS Coalition has received a lot of it in the past month. These articles feature Neinas Elementary and Hope of Detroit, as well as the larger Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.

At the PBE conference in November, I brought four 6th grade students to help present about their learning around bats. In talking with the students after the event, some interesting take aways came to light. One was that they were struck by how multiple adults wanted to listen to their information about bats. This made an impact on them as to how their voice can reach a larger population. The second piece that resonated with me was their reflection on how the learning they’re doing in class can be shared with another audience and influence people in a community that is beyond our school, Jackson County and even our state, Michigan.
