With great sadness, we announce the passing of Mariann Lupinacci-Kosinski on April 9, 2021. We would like to take this moment to express our deep love for her and our gratitude for all that she brought to the Coalition and the world. As the principal of John Paul II Catholic School, an early SEMIS Coalition school, Mariann helped to set the foundation for our Coalition and was the definition of a servant-leader. Mariann was a humble and gentle person whose love for life shone out through her bright eyes. But make no mistake, when Mariann saw injustice, she was fierce. Mariann passed these qualities on to her children, many of whom have participated in and contributed to SEMIS in profound ways. Jacque and Matt were part of SEMIS’ first teacher cohort. Dr. John Lupinacci, her son, was a founding SEMIS teacher and a member of our original Steering Committee, and he continues to be a powerful advocate for the Coalition and our work. He is now one of the country’s leaders in ecojustice education. As the head of the Lupinacci SEMIS clan, and because of her amazing powers of leadership, Mariann was affectionately known by SEMIS staff as “Super Lupinacci.”
We will miss you, Super Lupinacci! You will always live in our hearts and work, and when times get tough, remembering what you advocated for will inspire and give us strength.
Our condolences to the Lupinacci clan for this painful loss. Please know that we have been thinking of you since your mom’s passing, and we love you all!
