“This diagram was created as a flower because the design would grab the attention of little kids. The petals present the order of loudness expected of kids during the school day. I placed the decibels (dB) per level on the t-shirts of the little people in the diagram to try to reduce intimidation. The decibel values are also in order from least to greatest.“
The is an adaptation of a voice level chart that students use at the Boggs School to manage the loudness of their voice. The original chart has a range from 0 to 4 with description included. Students explored voice level and the connection to air quality by attempting to incorporate decibels (dB) and droplet spread, with or without masks. This exploration allowed students to share what they learned about contributing to clear air in a pandemic in a non-threatening way. I hope you find it helpful!

I love the idea of making the numbers less intimidating by putting them on the shirts, Adoria! I also think that the smaller kids will respond to a flower image better than the one we have. Thanks for creating this!
This is so cool! I love how you are using a radial pattern (one of nature’s building blocks) to build our understanding of a central idea – staying safe – and different ways that safety can be created. I really appreciate your references to nature in this graphic via beauty as well.
