ABOUT SEMIS SCHOOLS

When school administrators, teachers and students become members of the SEMIS Coalition, they have access to the resources and fellowship of all of our partnering schools and community organizations through networking opportunities, our website, and other shared public forums.

In addition, teachers, administrators and students will have the opportunity to network statewide with other teachers and community organizations as participants in the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI).

SEMIS also provides ongoing support to help teachers and students evaluate and communicate their work out to the local community, the region, and the state.

ABOUT SEMIS STUDENTS

Students become stewards of their local community as evidenced by:

  • Engagement in and completion of place-based projects that address ecological and social problems and serve community needs.
  • Participation in cooperative relationships in the community to address real problems.
  • Willingness to examine and address their own assumptions about their relationships to and responsibilities for human and non-human members of communities.

WHAT DO SEMIS SCHOOLS DO?

Each school in the SEMIS Coalition involves a team of teachers as a professional learning community within the school. Teacher teams engage in sustained professional development throughout the school year and once in the summer for our annual Summer Institute.

Each Teacher team works with SEMIS Community Partners to develop interdisciplinary curricula which combines existing content and community involvement funded by SEMIS through the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.

Each school is working on community-based learning projects that focus on grade level content learning while educating students for environmental and social stewardship of their local communities.
